Hair loss in women is a fairly common, but often underdiagnosed, problem. While usually not as severe as hair loss in men, it can be very emotionally distressing for the woman involved. The current correct term for hair loss in women is female pattern hair loss (FPHL). Approximately 50% of women will experience some degree of FPHL during their lifetime.
The pattern of hair loss in women is different than in men. There is diffuse central thinning, with sparing of the frontal hairline.
While the hair loss in women is not as severe as that seen in men, and complete baldness is rare, it can be very distressing.
Causes of female pattern hair loss can be excessive androgens (testosterone is produced in the adrenal gland in women), increasing age, and genetics can contribute. The female hormone, estrogen, appears to be somewhat protective; after menopause, the protective effect of estrogen is lost.
Environmental stressors such as emotional stress, nutritional deficiency, and poor skin blood flow can contribute.
