Male pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia) is the most common form of hair loss in men. Lifetime risk of hair loss in men is very high- approximately 80% of men will have some hair loss by age 70.
In men, the hair loss process usually begins after puberty. It is characterized by bitemporal recession of the frontal hairline, with sparing of the sides and back. It is non-scaring, and the large, terminal scalp hairs are lost, and replaced by small miniature vellus type hairs. It starts with thinning, and progresses into complete hair loss. Approximately 25-30% of men will experience male pattern balding in there 30s, progressing to 50% by age 50, and approaching 80% by age 70.
The risk of male pattern hair loss definitely has a genetic predisposition. The genetic risk comes through both the mother and father, although certain genetic risks come from the X chromosome- inherited from the mother.
Although hair loss in men is more socially accepted than in women, it can be very distressing. It is also associated with medical conditions. Androgenic alopecia can be a sign of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is also associated with obesity and hypertension. Some evidence also links male pattern hair loss with an increased risk of coronary artery disease.
Early onset of male pattern hair loss, and more complete hair loss increases the risk of these conditions.
Different interventions can help to preserve or restore hair. Medical treatment, such as minoxidil and finasteride can be helpful.
In our clinic, we have a three pronged approach to hair restoration, all of which have been shown to be helpful. The three pronged approach consists of: microneedling with exosomes, red light therapy (photobiomodulation), and home care with a serum and shampoo that stimulate hair regrowth. All three components have independently been shown to be helpful.
Success is greater with hair restoration when started early in the process- the same as in many medical interventions.
If you or someone you know is interested in hair restoration, please schedule a consultation in our clinic.
