Autoimmune Diseases

There are over 80 million Americans known to have some kind of autoimmune disease. These autoimmune diseases include type 1 diabeteslupusrheumatoid arthritismultiple sclerosiscolitisCrohn’s diseaseHashimoto thyroiditisSjogrens disease, and many other that are becoming more and more common.

Out of all these autoimmune diseases, there is one root biochemical
process that is in common: the body attacks itself.

There is evidence of an immune system that has gotten out of control causing a systemic inflammatory response resulting in the body attacking its own tissues. With this intense inflammation, there are daily challenging symptoms including pain, swelling, fatigue, and lastly, a chronic disability.

There is more and more data available each year that describes how important our gut is in stopping foreign invaders from breaking down our defense. Dr. Steven Grundy in his book “The Plant Paradox” describes how “all autoimmune diseases are caused by alterations in the good bugs and the bad bugs that live in your gut, and your mouth, and on your skin, along with a change in the permeability of your gut wall and mouth and gums”.

Our immune system is the first line of defense for anything that breaks through our gut wall. Sometimes there are foreign proteins that cross through this wall that mimics our own protein tricking our immune system.

It gets so confused on what is the bad guy and what is the good guy that our own tissues get caught in the crossfire.

Traditional medicine accepts this problem, but stops there without really looking for what could be causing the imbalance and the self- attack. Using a Functional Medical approach will help to find the source or cause of the autoimmune disease and help you fix the problem.

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

Many times one goes to see the doctor and gets told she has Hashimoto’s disease. This can be quite frightening and may throw quite a few questions through ones mind. What does this mean? Can I get rid of it? Will this disease shorten my life?

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is a term to describe an inflammatory disease within your thyroid gland. It is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the “oven process” of the thyroid production of thyroxine – a powerful element that plays a major role in the metabolism and thermostat of the body.

The damage and inflammation caused by our own immune system leads to a very under active thyroid gland called Hypothyroidism. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in American. This disease seems to target middle aged women but can also be found in men and women of any age as well as in children.

Symptoms of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

  • Hair loss
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Constipation
  • Brittle nails
  • Enlargement of the tongue
  • Muscle aches, tenderness and stiffness
  • Fatigue and sluggishness
  • Increased sensitivity to cold
  • Constipation
  • Pale, dry skin
  • A puffy face

Doctors test the thyroid function to help detect Hashimoto’s Disease. Treatment of Hashimoto’s Disease with thyroid hormone replacement usually is simple and effective to manage the symptoms but the advantage of following the advise of a functional medicine practitioner will help you get to the root of the autoimmune challenge and cure the disease.

If you or your loved one would like see what functional treatment options are available for Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, please book your appointment and let’s discuss your options.

Infertility

On average, 80% to 90% of couples are able to conceive after trying the first year. The remaining 10%-20% face infertility issues or problems.

The idea or description of infertility is unclear to many people. Infertility may be described as a woman who is unable to conceive when having regular unprotected sex for six months to a year; as well as the failure to carry a pregnancy to full term.

Facing these trails of infertility can be frustrating and sometimes devastating to a couple, especially when there is no known cause or reason for the infertility.

As a woman tries to learn the different potential causes that may be contributing to her infertility, she will need professional counseling, guidance, and support.

Education and assistance in understanding the different possible causes will help to prevent any further problems attributing to her infertility.

Here at American Wellness & Rehab Clinic we provide this education and assistance to help you with your individual infertility issues. We develop a personalized individualized care plan for each couple that addresses their own special needs to help them begin their family.

Each woman or man has their own unique issues of infertility concern that we address through special blood work, ultrasound procedures, lifestyle coaching – including meal planning, stress management, sleep habits, and exercise – all that play a key role in supporting your infertility issues.

We have a very high success rate not only in identifying the infertility issue but in correcting the imbalance for a successful pregnancy.

Lupus

Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which our own body’s immune system has gotten so confused that it attacks its own cell organs including skin, joint, lungs, kidneys, blood, and brain!!.

There are many studies showing that “foreign proteins” break through our single celled membrane of the gut that “mimics”( looks just like one of our own body’s proteins). This foreign protein was let in and allowed to settle into its new home unharmed.

The only thing is…….this protein is the ENEMY that has snuck across the front lines!!

Each of us must make sure that we keep the good bug that lives in our intestines happy and fed (prebiotics) and that we starve out the bad bugs from the foods they like (high fructose corn syrup, sugary foods, soda pop) Our gut microbiome is our number one defense in protecting us from invasions and attacks.

When our own immune system turns on itself, there are miserable symptoms we experience such as
inflammation, pain, swelling, aches, fatigue, along with chronic disability.

Here is a list of some primary symptoms of lupus…
1. Rash
2. Oral or nasal lesions
3. Photo sensitivity
4. Joint pain
5. Chest discomfort or pain
6. Fevers or headaches
7. Raynaud’s (blue fingers and or toes)
8. Hair loss
9. Poor kidney function – swelling of feet, hands, and ankles
10. Fatigue
11. Thyroid problems like weight changes
12. Gastrointestinal issues like pain, changes in bowel pattern

If you or someone you know would like to find out what functional treatment is available for you or your loved one, please book an appointment and let’s sit down and discuss your options.

Perimenopause and Menopause

Women begin the journey into menopause by first going through a phase of gearing up to reach the finish line. This phase is known as perimenopause.

Each woman enters this phase of perimenopause at different ages, but usually this is seen in the late 40’s. She can expect to see some physical hints of perimenopause such as changes in her monthly cycle – becoming irregular, heavier, or skipping all together.

A woman may also note an occasional hot flashes, vaginal dryness, sleep disruption, along with mood swings. These symptoms are the result of unevenly changing levels of ovarian hormones (estrogen) in her body.

Stress, lack of sleep, poor diet, and lack of exercise affects the overall outcome a woman may experience going through her perimenopause and menopause period as this disrupts her ovarian hormone levels even more!!

Every woman’s goal in life is to slide into natural menopause. This is a spontaneous but permanent ending of menstruation which is NOT caused by any medical treatment.

Menopause is a normal, natural event, and the way a woman’s body is designed, this can happen quite uneventfully. The more symptoms a woman experiences, the more her body is off balance.

Our goal here at American Wellness & Rehab Clinic is to help provide a woman with the tools needed to provide her with a very wonderful transition into menopause.

Book your appointment today!! We will be glad to help you along your journey through the stages of perimenopause and menopause through……..

  • Diet and lifestyle management
  • Hormone replacement therapy

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks joint tissue causing inflammation and pain. With any autoimmune disease, once our body starts to create an antibody against different parts of our body, it is a daily struggle to keep the immune system calm and quiet and avoid tissue damage.

Stress and our diet is known to be a major “trigger” that seems to flare up RA symptoms. Much is said about the gut and its role in autoimmune disease. Dr. Steven Grundy, a well known cardiologist uses a restorative health model to help heal the gut by diet and food choices. He feels that you must keep the microbiome (the good bugs and the bad bugs that live in our intestine) happy and balanced. If there is a disruption of this balance, there will be a very high risk of a bacteria and foreign protein invasion across the gut lining out into the blood stream.

When there is a break in our gut defense, our immune system is alerted and our body will naturally inflame and swell to try fighting off the bad guys. The very sad part of this scenario is the fact that our immune system was “tricked” by the impostor and begins to fight against its own joint tissue.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is 2-3 times more common in women.

Rheumatoid Arthritis symptoms may come and go and is very unpredictable…

Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms:

  • Painful, Swollen, Warm Joints
  • Pain and stiffness lasting for more than 30 minutes in the morning or after a long rest.
  • Inflamation in the finger joints and wrists, neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, ankles, or feet.
  • Symetrical pattern of inflammation, meaning both sides of the body are impacted at once
  • Fatigue, occasional fever, and a general feeling of discomfort

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms described above, it’s important to talk with your doctor about whether or not you could be suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Schedule a visit with us and we can discuss your options for treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Sjogren’s Syndrome

Many people are diagnosed with an autoimmune disease every day. Autoimmune disease is when the body’s own immune system begins to attack it’s own tissues. Autoimmune diseases are very unpredictable and can cause life long damage to the body.

Every day, a person who suffers from an autoimmune disease faces an intensive battle in which the immune system is thinking it is fighting hard to protect you when in reality, it is destroying your cells, your tissue, and your health.

Sjogren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disease where our immune system fights against tissues and cells that produce mucous.. This affects all the moisture-secreting glands beginning with the eyes and mouth — resulting in decreased mucous and moisture such as tears and saliva.

Sjogren’s disease can happen any time, but seems to target those over 40 years old.

There could be other symptoms of Sjogren’s syndrome present that are commonly found in those diagnosed with Sjogren’s syndrome such as….

  • Persistent dry cough
  • Swollen salivary glands – mainly the set that is located behind the jaw and in front of the ears.
  • Prolonged fatigue
  • Skin rashes or very dry skin
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Joint pain, swelling and stiffness

There is really no real known cause of Sjogren’s syndrome, but Scientists do feel there could be certain genes putting one at a higher risk. There does seem to be evidence of a triggering mechanism — such as a bacterial or viral infection that could set off this self immune attack.

Many researchers and functional health providers target the gut as a high suspecting cause of Sjogren’s syndrome. When there is an imbalance of the gut flora, one can be very vulnerable to the gut barrier breaking apart setting off a series of immune defense responses.

No matter what the cause, using a functional medicine for a personalized focus in the treatment will allow one to get to the root of the cause of the syndrome, once again putting your health back into balance.

If you would like more information on Sjogren’s Syndrome and how we can help you with a functional solution, book an appointment today and let’s sit down and discuss it!
